Corrosion Behavior of Multiphase Bainitic Rail Steels

Pearlitic steel experiences excessive corrosion in a hot and humid atmosphere. The multiphase bainitic/martensitic structure was developed for better combination of strength ductility, especially rolling contact fatigue, but little attention to has been investigated. Corrosion behaviors steels obtained from bainitic-austempering (BAT) bainitic-quenching -partitioning (BQ&P) processes were investigated via immersion electrochemical tests 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution. corroded surface rust after analyzed electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectra, x-ray diffraction. bainite + martensite/retained austenite island showed higher resistance than that the pearlitic one. acicular BQ&P process slightly granular martensite BAT process.
